Toy Safety Information:
We receive many questions regarding toy safety and recalls. We are an authorized Melissa & Doug toy retailer and all the toys we sell meet or exceed toy safety standards for the United States. We know that you are concerned regarding toy safety. As a parent myself, I also became very concerned regarding the recent toy recalls and did a little research. This is what I have discovered:
"We value the public trust in toy safety. The ability to identify problems and recall products is one of the safety valves in the system. The recent recalls are product and company specific, and do not reflect the fundamental safety of the 3 billions toys sold in America each year."
I personally spoke with representatives from the Melissa & Doug Company and was assured that all of the Melissa & Doug products meet or exceed all US standards for toy safety. The paints used in Melissa & Doug products are vegetable based. Following is a statement that was issued by the Melissa & Doug manufacturing company:
Dear Valued Customer:
Yes, we definitely appreciate and understand your concern. Please be assured, we test for lead VERY frequently. It's quite possible to make great quality children's items in China, which meet all safety regulations, but the key point is that you have to test and inspect very frequently to be sure that your factories are always following your instructions explicitly. I assure you that's exactly what we do.
From our experience, the key to doing this correctly is not simply to insist that your factories follow your instructions, but then to go one step further and to AUDIT, INSPECT, AND TEST very frequently. That is the most important part of the process, and it's something our company has always taken VERY seriously.

I additionally discovered that Melissa & Doug are the parents of 6 children themselves. They are actively involved in their business on a daily basis. Melissa is in charge of development and testing. Their products carry their names and they are very dedicated to making sure that their product is safe.
Many of their products are made in China; however, they are manufactured according to strict Melissa & Doug standards. The testing of the Melissa & Doug products is NOT outsourced. The toys are inspected in the China factories by a full-time team of Melissa & Doug employees from the United States. Once the toys arrive in the United States they are tested again by a different team of Melissa & Doug employees. This second testing is not required; but, is an additional step Melissa & Doug do to insure the safety of their products. This second testing assures that no contamination occurred during shipping. After these two (2) stringent quality control testing procedures are completed and passed, the products are then released to authorized Melissa & Doug retailers.
I feel very comfortable regarding the safety of Melissa & Doug products, I believe their past history and reputation speaks for itself, and that is why I have chosen to sell this awesome, outstanding line of heirloom quality educational toys and puzzles.
